I am a two time breast cancer survivor. I was first diagnosed in 2009 at the age of 42 with stage 2 estrogen positive breast cancer. At the age of 48, I was diagnosed a second time with triple negative breast cancer.
At the time of my first diagnosis, I was unemployed and had no health insurance. I received a grant provided by Komen Charlotte to pay for my mammogram and biopsy. I had a lumpectomy followed by chemo and radiation treatment. Six years later at age 48, I was diagnosed again. I was lucky that I had health insurance this time. I had a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery.
Breast cancer runs in my family. My mother was diagnosed when I was 20 years old (she was 50). Thankfully she survived. From then on it seems as if it has been a part of my life.
My sister, Anita, found out she had breast cancer when she was 51 years old. She passed away from it in 2017 at the age of 52. My sister, Gina, has also had breast cancer and thankfully survived. My youngest sister, Carla, decided to have a preventative double mastectomy after watching us go though cancer treatments. We all carry the BRCA-1 gene mutation.
I have a 17 year old daughter who was 5 when I was first diagnosed. She is adopted so thankfully I cannot pass this on to her. However, I want her to see a world without breast cancer!
I am participating in the Race for the Cure for the 11th consecutive year. Although it will be a virtual event this year, it is still very important to me to help others because someone raised money many years ago that helped me get treatment that helped save my life! It gave me so many more years with my daughter and family.
I am fundraising in honor of my mother (my best friend) who passed away in January (not from breast cancer) and my sister, Anita, who lost her battle. I am also doing this to celebrate a friend who was recently diagnosed and is currently going through treatment.
Please help me raise funds by making a donation. You could save someone’s life. Someone did that for me.
Think about that....
